Around the world, thousands of competitions exist across a vast array of subject areas with millions of people competing each year. Research into the effectiveness and benefits of creative competitions is largely centred around organisations and companies, with a focus on product and industrial design. Despite this, thousands of students participate in graphic design awards and competitions each year, with little to no research regarding their effectiveness.

The aim of this dissertation was to evaluate the effectiveness of student graphic design awards and competitions. In doing so, students and graduates could then draw their own conclusions as to whether competing or submitting is worth it for them.
